Photo taken at West 10th Street on April 7, 1957
Title:
Series 4: Photographs
Collection:
Mayor Robert F. Wagner records
Date:
1957-04-07
Description:
In the foreground are concrete foundations, marking the old building line, which were covered by 6 feet of sand when the Boardwalk was moved back to "provide greater beach space" in 1940 at the expense of the City of $ 6,000,000. The neglect of the jetty once covered by the sand back to the Boardwalk line is obvious. This photo taken at West 10th Street on April 7, 1957 is indicative of conditions in very many sections of the beach. In some areas there is sand under the Boardwalk, while the high tide practically reaches to the very Boardwalk.
